With the recent adoption of Blackboard, the number of online assessment tools and the possible ways they can be used have increased dramatically. The use of online assessment tools are of course valuable for online courses, but the potential benefits for face to face or blended environments should not be overlooked. It is possible to create tests that can be set to automatically grade and provide feedback, which has huge potential, especially for large classes (using pools, you can even draw random questions from a larger set of questions, so each student gets their own unique question set). Using “adaptive release”, you can require students to pass a test/quiz before moving on to more material. Being able to embed online rubrics into assignments/discussions/tests can help make for more efficient and fair/uniform grading (even with multiple graders). This just begins to describe some of the possibilities. In this workshop, we will focus mostly on using adaptive release, assignments, rubrics, tests, surveys, and pools within Blackboard.
*This is an interactive workshop, so faculty are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop (or contact us to have one ready if you do not have your own). We will demonstrate how to use these tools, but more importantly, we want you trying them out while we are there to help. Ideally, you will leave the workshop with some basic assessments that you can include in your course, as well as an understanding of how to create more.
Should you need to use an Open Learning laptop for this workshop, please contact Alicia Higgison (higgison@uwindsor.ca) and one can be provided for you.

Good teaching and effective communication go hand in hand. In the on-campus classroom, we can see how our students react to our communication strategies, but what about in the online classroom? What tools exist to help facilitate effective communication? What strategies can we use to facilitate deep discussions, lively interactions, and build a sense of community?
In this workshop, we will explore some practical examples of how Blackboard and other web-based tools can be used to encourage greater student participation, help improve time on task, and reduce the isolation that online learners (and teachers!) often feel. This workshop will provide a range of evidence-based tips and hints that will help you develop communication approaches that work for you and your students, and which make your online classes lively, engaging places to learn.
*Please bring along a digital device (laptop, tablet, phone) so you can interact with some of the communication tools, and a syllabus for a course you have taught (online or face to face).
