Education students: Creating and sharing Open Educational Resources
Registration for this event is now closed.
Schedule:
Wednesday, November 25, 2020, 02:30 PM – 04:00 PM
Location:
Online, Anywhere
Instructors:
Nick Baker
Please note: This workshop is intended for Faculty of Education students enrolled in the BEd program.
Creation and publishing of openly licenced educational resources via the internet has the potential to be globally transformational to education, breaking down barriers of cost, bias, and equity. Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching and learning materials (both digital and analogue) that are in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation, retention, and redistribution by others with limited restrictions. In November 2019, UNESCO adopted a recommendation on member nations promoting adoption of OERs, which is more important than ever during the global pandemic that has disrupted teaching and learning so significantly. This workshop will introduce students to the concept of OERs, explore some of the existing repositories of resources for the K-12 sector that offer exemplars and starting points for creating your own resources, identify core tools available to help you create OERs, and introduce Creative Commons licences as a way to actively licence your work and share it safely.

Have you heard of open educational resources (OER)? How many students do you think could even purchase their required textbook with the rising cost of living? Did you know you can use OERs as a more cost effective and equitable student learning approach by integrating OERs in your teaching? This session will introduce OERs and their benefits, help you identify some of the repositories to find OERS, and learn about the 5R permissions of open publishing. In addition, this interactive session will highlight the difference between free and open resources and the six Creative Commons license types promoting the sharing and reuse of OERs.
This is a hybrid event, which means you can attend either in person in CEI 1232 or online. A Teams invite will be sent the day before the event.
