Location:

With the November release of ChatGPT the next wave of AI responses has made it to the mainstream. Now, in addition to finding answer keys and working groups in online spaces, students can now generate their own answers to questions with the click of a button. And this is only the beginning.
Most of the methods that we have traditionally used to force students to 'do their own work' have been overcome by the technology and connections available to students online. What methods can we use to combat this? Should we be entering into this new arms race against the students and find new technologies to fight their new technologies? Are there other pedagogical or systemic approaches that we can use to combat this?
This is the second in our series of discussions on the future of students doing their own work.

This a community of inquiry to consider different approaches to dealing with web-based tools that impact our classrooms. Whether those tools are AI (like ChatGPT), homework sharing sites (like Chegg) or other software based tools that are designed to support students in their work, we need to explore strategies that move towards a healthier classroom and away from surveillance and punishment. This group meets to discuss new research, debate new strategies and release commentary from those discussions on a regular basis.
Feel free to drop in and out of the discussion group as it works for you.

We are 18 months into GenAI tools like ChatGPT impacting our learning and our classrooms. Faculty have found interesting ways to use GenAI to do algorithmic tasks and we've all found different ways that students are using in our classes - some better than others. What practices are emerging? What new ways of thinking about our classrooms are out there? How have some of our initial attempts worked?
This session will address these issues and offer an opportunity for faculty to share their own experiences as well.

The popularization of Generative AI tools will lead to at least some change in the university as we know it. Some experts are suggesting that we need to prepare students for an AI world and others are insisting that it's mostly hype. Is it going to be a transformational change or will GenAI just be one more tool in the toolbox? Are schools mostly trying to ban it or are they embracing it? This session will look at how this conversation is progressing both here in Canada and internationally.

Generative AI is catalyzing significant changes across society. One important emerging area of impact is the ability for AI to improve accessibility for people with a wide range of disabilities. AI tools can provide automatic captions and language translation, language support, speech recognition, assisted speech, automated sign language, lip reading, describe images, facial recognition for technology control, mobility support, the ability to summarise and communicate information in different ways, and a wide range of learning aids. This session will discuss the rapidly developing and potentially life-changing capabilities of AI as an assistive technology, particularly for students in higher education.
