Marium Tolson-Murtty
Marium Tolson-Murtty is a proud Windsorite, educator, and entrepreneur. With deep roots in the Windsor community, she was born and raised in Windsor and is the youngest of 7 children. As a three-time graduate of The University of Windsor, she completed an Honours Bachelor of Arts Degree in Communication Studies, a Bachelor of Education and, a Master of Education degree. Marium was currently pursuing her doctoral studies at UWindsor in Education in the social, cultural, and political context of education. Marium has over 20 years of experience working in the field of post-secondary education. Her professional career in education includes work as an Experiential Learning Coordinator, Student Recruitment Officer, and Continuing Teacher Education Program Coordinator in the Faculty of Education. Marium is currently on secondment in the Office of the President/Office of the Vice- President Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion at the University of Windsor as the Strategic Planning Officer for Anti-Black Racism Initiatives. In this role, Marium leads the Anti-Black Racism Task Force, and is working towards an Anti-Black Racism Implementation Framework that includes race-based data collection, creating grant opportunities for faculty, students and staff, and efforts to promote curriculum reform, just to name a few. These are the necessary efforts to bring substantive change in dismantling systemic systems of oppression at the University Windsor, home to 16,000 students. Marium is heavily involved in the community. To name JUST a few things, she is the past President and chartered member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Psi Delta Omega Chapter, the first Canadian Chapter in the Sorority’s history; past board member with the Youth Connection Association; member of DWIS (Distinguished Women of International Service); A board member for the United Way-Windsor/Essex where she sits on the inaugural EDI committee as well as serves as a member of Women United; Member of the Board of Directors for Family Fuse; she is the Founder of a new post-secondary education mentoring program called PROPEL (Preparing for the Realities of Post Secondary Education and Life); member of The Black Council of Windsor Essex; Black Women of Forward Action; and, one of the chartered members of Black Boys Code – Windsor. Currently, Marium is the President of the Hour A Day Study Club, in its 87th year, and is Canada’s oldest African Canadian women’s organization. Marium is passionate about Life-Long Learning and promoting education, and helping to ensure those who want to pursue higher learning do not let any barriers stand in their way.
