Learning-centered Course Design: Fundamental Principles and Practices

Registration closes August 11, 2026.
Schedule: Wednesday, August 12, 2026, 09:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Location: CTL 1232/1233 (700 California)
Instructors: Michael K. Potter
Want to ensure your students learn as much and as deeply as possible in the brief time you have with them in any given semester? Learn the basic principles and practices of creating a truly learning-centered course in this discussion-based workshop. This workshop will introduce participants to backwards design (specifically, constructive alignment), authentic and aligned assessment, and intentional selection of teaching and learning approaches. By the end of this workshop participants will be able to ensure that each and every element of their courses has been strategically designed and chosen for mutual reinforcement and facilitation of deep, meaningful, and lasting learning – no matter the discipline. Discussions will include opportunities to learn from shared exemplars, consider viable teaching and assessment alternatives, and create a course culture of continuous learning toward mastery.

Effective use of digital learning tools can enhance your course design and support student learning. This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the essential tools and features of the Brightspace learning management system. Learn how to organize course material, create and upload content, and use the html editor and visibility settings to help create engaging learning material. You’ll also learn how to use Brightspace to communicate with students, how to add teaching assistants, and where to access support when needed. By the end of this session, participants will be ready to begin building online components of their courses in Brightspace.
