Active learning is a teaching method based on the belief that students should be actively engaged in the learning process. Active learning techniques can be utilized to promote effective thinking both within and beyond the classroom. This workshop will introduce a selection of active learning techniques that can be adapted within a variety of disciplines.

Have you experienced labs or tutorials that were boring, confusing, or seemed to be a waste of time? Would you like to make your labs and tutorials more like the former and less like the latter? In this workshop, we’ll explore how we can make labs and tutorials more ACTIVE, *fun*, and  effective  for students and for ourselves. We'll share our experiences (as students, GAs/TAs, and instructors), lessons learned, and best practices. You'll discuss and experience some teaching techniques that you can use as GAs/TAs to facilitate your labs and tutorials.

The First Day

Congratulations, you are a Teaching Assistant. But what should you do on the first day of classes? Reading the syllabus aloud while everyone follows along seems a little boring, and you always hated it when professors did that.
The first day is most likely the first time you will present yourself as a teacher. Let’s think through the sort of teacher you want to be and fun ways to get to know your students. On this one day, you have the opportunity to set the tone and expectations for what is acceptable in your classroom, and most importantly, it is a chance to get to know your students before the academic pressures of the semester set in. Make the first day of classes informative and engaging in a way that sets the tone for the rest of the semester.

Schedule: Thursday, September 03, 2015, 10:45 AM – 12:15 PM

Feedback is an essential tool for students to gauge their success within a course. More importantly, it provides students an opportunity for self-reflection and properly prepares them for growth and improvement. Providing feedback, however, requires that the evaluator pay attention to student needs, clearly reflect upon student weaknesses, and use student strengths as positive reinforcement. In addition, the mode of delivery (i.e., clarity, tone, and timing) is also critical in maximizing the efficacy of the feedback. In this session, we will examine some key strategies in preparing and delivering thoughtful and valuable feedback to students by providing hands-on examples that can be translated across disciplines.

Location: Odette B03

How do instructors pitch their lectures so that they can make themselves understood by students who may have vastly different levels of background knowledge and proficiency? How can you tell if the students in your classroom are following what you say, feeling lost and frustrated, or are bored because they think you are going into too much detail about things they already know?
New instructors and teaching assistants have spent many years acquiring deep knowledge, and it can be difficult to get back into the mindset of a student who is still a novice in that subject area. This workshop will focus on approaches and techniques to create and deliver lectures in a way that explains things effectively, as well as ways of determining whether you are really being clear to your students, and how to use student feedback to redirect your teaching efforts.
