Start your Brightspace training with the Getting Started with Brightspace workshop to provide the basis for the more advanced workshops.

Once you are registered for a workshop, if you find you will not be able to attend, kindly unregister for the workshop so facilitators can plan activities accordingly.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning's Brightspace Workshop series provides in-person and on-line synchronous learning opportunities in two varieties: Step-by-Step: relaxed, slower-paced sessions and Quick Steps: faster, technically driven sessions.

Getting Started with Brightspace (for instructors, GAs & staff)

“Online“QuickNeed to learn Brightspace? Start with this workshop. This workshop will introduce participants to the Brightspace environment and provide an overview of the tools in Brightspace. Participants will walk through the process of structuring course content in Brightspace, and uploading and creating content. Focus will be placed on learning the features that are found throughout Brightspace, such as the html editor and visibility options to help create engaging learning material. The Announcements tool, sending class emails, adding TAs, and where to find support resources will also be included.

** This workshop is an expected prerequisite before taking other Brightspace workshops.

Quick Steps: This option will offer a fast-paced more technically driven step-by-step workshop. This category is suitable for the learner who possesses a high comfort level in learning and adopting new technology.

Brightspace Assignments tool

“Online“QuickThe Assignments tool is the place to provide assignment instructions to students, whether you collect submissions online, on paper, or through in person observations. It is also where students submit their digital submissions and where you assess their submissions.

In this workshop, participants will create, review, and grade an assignment. An introduction to using Rubrics in your assignments will be included.

Grades Tool: Streamline grading process and keep students in the loop

This session will walk you through setting up a Gradebook using Setup Wizard and Manage Grades. You’ll learn how grades automatically sync from assessments like Quizzes and Assignments—saving time and ensuring accuracy. We’ll also explore the Learner View to show how transparent grading supports motivation and reduces uncertainty throughout the term.

Make the most of the Grades tool by learning to use it correctly.

Using Brightspace Discussions to increase student engagement

The Discussions tool can encourage students to share thoughts on course material with their peers, to ask questions, discuss course content and assignments, and work together in assigned groups and sections. Learn how to create, moderate, and grade discussions in Brightspace, as well as tips to facilitate in-depth conversations, promote collaborative learning, use alternate grading approaches, and provide a flexible platform for sharing information and solving problems.
