See the Universe Through the Eyes of Another: Culturally Aware Assessment

Registration for this event is now closed.
Schedule: Tuesday, August 16, 2016, 01:00 PM – 02:30 PM
Location: The Katzman Lounge
Instructors: Emma Bourassa, Chris Busch
Instructors frequently find that students do not perform as well as expected on assignments. There are myriad reasons for this, but one important one is that many students lack understanding of and comfort with the academic culture and conventions. Effective assignment design can help address these issues.
In this session, participants will explore differences in communicative and cultural styles that may prevent students from producing high quality assignments. Participants will also have the opportunity to analyse one of their own assignments to find where possible changes can lead to higher achievement from students.

Experiential Learning: Nothing Ever Becomes Real 'til it is Experienced

Registration for this event is now closed.
Schedule: Tuesday, August 16, 2016, 03:00 PM – 04:30 PM
Location: The Katzman Lounge
Instructors: Roger Bryan, Marty Gervais
Research suggests that long-lasting learning is best accomplished when the learning activity is directly connected to experience - students remember best when facts and skills are embedded in real-life activity. In this workshop, participants will learn about how the Department of English Language, Literature and Creative Writing and the Odette School of Business partnered to develop a unique year-long Editing Practicum that sees English and Business students edit, publish, and launch books by local authors under the Black Moss Press banner.

Led by Professors Marty Gervais and Roger Bryan, participants will see how the creative process melds with business to yield a finished product that is marketed and sold to the general public. Facilitators will explore how the collaboration between the two faculties began, the trials and joys they have experienced along the way, and ideas on how to enhance experiential learning opportunities in your own departments.

Where Angels Fear to Tread: eAssessment

Registration for this event is now closed.
Schedule: Wednesday, August 17, 2016, 01:00 PM – 02:30 PM

Online assessment can be a time-saver and facilitator of student learning, or a gilded cage of torture, depending on how well the assessment was designed, thought through, tested, and implemented within a course.
In this workshop, we'll explore some approaches of eAssessment, which can be easily adopted into your courses including online quizzes and exams, case studies, discussions, peer evaluation, adaptive assessment tasks, ePortfolios, connecting to simulations or other third party applications, providing options to allow students to choose their assessments, and so much more! We will also review an introduction to the theory and best practices of eAssessment, as well as feature some real scenarios from faculty members along with their experiences and recommendations. There will be a question and answer period to address individual issues, time permitting.
